HKBN Pioneers Hong Kong’s First 1.6T Optical Core Network and Introduces 100Gbps Metro Ethernet Service to Power AI and High-performance Computing Era

(Hong Kong — July 14, 2025) HKBN Enterprise Solutions (HKBNES) today announced the development of Hong Kong’s first 1.6T (Terabit) ultra-high-speed optical core network^, addressing the growing demand for data transmission bandwidth. Alongside this breakthrough, HKBNES unveiled a tenfold upgrade to its Metro Ethernet (MetroNet) service, now offering 100Gbps bandwidth to empower enterprises with higher-performance private networks for advanced technologies such as Generative AI, machine learning, cloud-based supercomputing, and ultra-high-definition video applications.

Such network infrastructure and technological advancement will synergise to help enterprises overcome today’s digital challenges while laying a robust foundation for future innovations.

1.6T Ultra-High-Speed Optical Core Network: The Engine for Tomorrow’s Technologies

With nearly 30 years of expertise in fibre network development and management, and over HK$8 billion invested in network infrastructure, HKBN is committing an additional HK$2 billion over the next five years to build a next-generation 1.6T optical core network, leveraging three cutting-edge technologies:

  • Optical Digital Signal Processing
  • Probabilistic Constellation Shaping
  • Artificial Neural Network Algorithms

This 1.6T optical core network will significantly enhance bandwidth, stability, and energy efficiency, while markedly reducing latency. It will also serve as a critical foundation for future MetroNet service upgrades.

Looking ahead, this upgrade will enable HKBN to become Hong Kong’s first broadband service provider ready for the F6G (Sixth Generation Fixed Network) standard, soon to be released by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute.

MetroNet 100Gbps: A Tenfold Upgrade of Metro Ethernet Service

HKBNES’s MetroNet 100Gbps service will cover Hong Kong’s major business districts and data centre areas, delivering a tenfold increase in data transmission speed – from the previous 10Gbps to 100Gbps.

MetroNet 100Gbps service delivers a breakthrough in connectivity, essential for meeting the critical demands of today’s AI-driven era – where real-time decision-making requires high bandwidth, ultra-low latency, corporate data privacy, and end-to-end security. Leveraging a dedicated private network, the service ensures secure transmission of sensitive data while providing highly reliable backup connectivity. This enables seamless cloud integration and data centre interconnectivity, making it especially suitable for AI and machine learning, high-frequency trading, real-time analytics, and precision medical technologies – empowering enterprises to scale and evolve with next-generation connectivity.

Dr. Denis Yip, HKBN President and Group Chief Operating Officer, stated: “HKBN is developing a Terabit-powered ‘Network for Tomorrow’ and launching the MetroNet 100Gbps service to lead enterprises into a new digital era. Our industry-leading network infrastructure and technologies not only shatter speed limits but also deliver superior performance and system security – giving enterprises a decisive competitive edge to capitalise on opportunities instantly.”
