Home Insurance Onboarding Questions
1. I have taken fire insurance, why do I need home contents insurance such as HKBN SmartHome Plus?
Generally, fire insurance protects the interest of you as well as the mortgage if your property is mortgaged. It covers the structure of the buildings such as walls, roof and floor against the risk of fire damage, as well as rainstorm, landslide or flood damage, but does not cover your home contents. HKBN SmartHome Plus covers home contents, third party liability, complements to fire insurance with comprehensive protection.
2. What is the sum insured for home contents insurance I need?
The amount of home contents insurance you're likely to need will depend on the amount you need to replace the furniture, fixtures and fittings, electrical appliances, personal belongings and valuables.
HKBN SmartHome Plus provides different sum insured according to different size of the property. You may also tailor the coverage of HKBN SmartHome Plus to your needs by adding some optional benefits.
3. I am a tenant, do I still need a home insurance if the landlord has purchased home insurance for the property?
You need home insurance if you would like to enjoy protection against your owned home contents and valuables, temporary accommodation when the premise is uninhabitable, tenant’s liability to the building rented and so forth. Please refer to the product brochure and policy wordings for details.
Coverage and Benefits Questions
1. What does HKBN SmartHome Plus cover?
HKBN SmartHome Plus covers your home contents and personal belongings against accidental loss or damage, or theft (except theft in your home should any part of it is let or your home is unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days, or theft from unattended vehicle). It protects your belongings from a wide range of unforeseen events like damage by typhoon, extreme weather, floods, burst pipes, fires, theft, accidental damage or other losses. It covers things like furniture, clothing, electrical appliances for domestic use, money, valuables, jewelry and interior decoration items (see question #2). It also reimburses the temporary alternative accommodation expense in case your home is uninhabitable, covers third party liability and provides 24-hour home assistance hotline services. With a range of additional benefits included, HKBN SmartHome Plus gives you peace of mind.
2. How does HKBN SmartHome Plus cover the fixtures and fittings at my home?
The home contents section of HKBN SmartHome Plus covers the fixtures and fittings put in by you and/or your family or any one for you and/or your family. Fixtures and fittings are interior decoration items that are fitted to and form part of the structure of your home including but not limited to doors, windows, wall coverings, bathroom suites, fitted kitchens, fitted wardrobe, fitted cabinets, flooring, and fitted carpets but excluding electrical domestic appliances and any drains, pipes, cables and/or wires.
For the avoidance of doubt, the term “home contents” does not include fixtures and fittings put in or left behind by ex-property owner or property developer of the home or any one for them, whether or not they are expressly included in the price or rent of the home.
Your fixtures and fittings provided by the ex-property owner or property developer can be covered by the optional benefit of "Fixtures & fittings by ex-property owner or property developer" (if any). If you are a tenant, the fixtures and fittings provided by your landlord are covered under the “Tenant's liability” subsection of “Liability to third party” section.
3. What coverage can I get if there is typhoon or black rainstorm?
HKBN SmartHome Plus covers damage of home contents by rain water seepage as a result of typhoon or black rainstorm. If the windows are put in by you and /or your family member or you have taken out the optional benefit of "Fixtures & fittings by ex-property owner or property developer", you can get reimbursement on the repair cost of the windows as a result of damages from typhoon or black rainstorm.
If water or electricity supply or all the elevators' service reaching the floor of your property is suspended over 6 hours arising from typhoon signal no.8 or above, or black rainstorm, we will reimburse your expenses on temporary accommodation and meal up to 5 days under typhoon shelter extension.
In case your home content is damaged and your home becomes uninhabitable, you can get reimbursement on the extra accommodation expenses for up to HKD 1,500 per day, and HKD 90,000 in the aggregate for all claims during the period of insurance.
4. What will be covered if a water pipe in my home bursts?
If a water pipe in your home accidentally bursts, HKBN SmartHome Plus covers the damages to your home contents such as furniture and personal belongings. In case your home becomes not fit to live in temporarily, you can get reimbursement on the expenses for alternative accommodation up to HKD 1,500 per day, and HKD 90,000 in the aggregate for all claims during the period of insurance.
In addition, if the water from the burst pipe damages the property of a third party, such as the apartment downstairs or the building's elevator, we will cover your liability for such damage up to HKD 10,000,000. You can choose to upgrade third-party liability to a maximum limit per policy year up to HKD 20,000,000.
5. If I rent a furnished apartment and all the electrical appliances and furniture at home are provided by my landlord, how does the HKBN SmartHome Plus work to cover me?
The electrical appliances for domestic use which are expressly included in the tenancy agreement will be covered as home contents. The fixtures and fittings and furniture provided by your landlord will be covered under the “Tenant’s Liability to the Building rented”, the sub-section of “Liability to third party”. You can refer HKBN SmartHome Plus product brochure for details about different plan's sum insured and sub-limits.
6. I bought a furnished property and the ex-property owner/ property developer offered electrical appliances, furniture and fixtures and fittings, how does HKBN SmartHome Plus work to cover me?
The fixtures and fittings, whether or not expressly included in the price of the property, will be covered if you select the optional benefit of "Fixtures & fittings by ex-property owner or property developer". The furniture and the electrical appliances for domestic use are covered as home contents.
7. How HKBN SmartHome Plus covers my valuables at home?
HKBN SmartHome Plus provides high protection from accidental loss or damage of the valuables at your home up to HKD20,000 per item (for Plan 3) and the aggregate sum insured up to HKD600,000 or 1/3 of the home contents sum insured (whichever is lesser).
Valuables include jewelry, watches, articles of gold, silver, or other precious metals, cameras and binoculars, works of art, antiques, furs, collections of stamps, coins and medals. You can select our optional benefit of worldwide personal belongings to protect your/your family's valuables, personal belongings and money wherever at your home or anywhere in the world.

1. Can I change my insured address of HKBN SmartHome Plus if I will move?
Yes, you can. Please contact AXA customer service hotline 2894 4690 for enquiry about the change of insured address; if you would like to relocate the home broadband installation service address (if applicable), please contact HKBN customer service hotline 128100.
2. How can I submit a claim?
In the event of a claim, the policyholder should:
(a) Advise AXA as soon as possible and within 31 days from the insured event
(b) Submit the claim via Emma by AXA (click HEREto download) and upload all relevant information and documents. Alternatively, the policyholder may submit the claim form and relevant documents to AXA via email at home.claims@axa.com.hk
3. How do I pay for the premium?
The premium will be reflected in our bill to you, issued by HKBN. You can conveniently make monthly or annual payments directly to HKBN, depending on the payment mode provided by the respective plan selected by you.
